A DHI hair transplant method, also know as the sapphire DHI hair transplant, is a long-term permanent solution and surgical procedure in which hair follicles are transplanted from one part of the head to another part where the hair is thinning or receding.
Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that carefully and painlessly removes hair follicles from one part of the body, called the ‘donor site’, to a balding part of the body known as the ‘recipient site’. The technique is primarily used to treat male and female pattern baldness and hair thinning.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is a modified and superior version of FUE hair transplant technology using a specially designed tool called the Choi pen, designed by the DHI Global Group to combat hair loss and pattern balding in men and women. Currently, the Choi pen used in the DHI hair transplant is the most advanced hair transplant technology on the market with a diameter of 1mm or less for 100% natural results, less trauma to the donor area, and faster healing and recovery overall.
DHI technology allows surgeons to have more control during hair transplant treatments. For this reason, the DHI method is often used when aiming to cover scars on the scalp. Those who have previously had a hair transplant using the outdated technology of FUT will be suited for DHI to cover their previous transplant scar incurred during FUT treatment.
During the DHI hair transplant method, the hair follicles are removed from the donor part of the body using the first-rate extractor and then directly placed on the balding or thinning areas of the patient’s head one by one. This is unlike the FUE hair transplant technology that requires a defined two-stage longer extraction process than implantation, leaving larger extraction holes requiring longer healing and recovery after the hair transplant procedure.
Am I Suitable For a DHI hair transplant?
Those with thinning hair or looking for a discrete hair loss treatment, particularly ladies or patients needing only a hairline fill-in or correction are great candidates for a DHI hair transplant. Unlike FUE hair transplant technology, DHI technology allows patients to not shave their heads for this procedure. However, the DHI hair transplant treatment is slightly more costly than the Sapphire FUE treatment.
Men struggling with male pattern baldness for at least five years are also advised to undergo DHI hair transplantation as it is the most effective hair loss treatment for those with advanced hair loss.
The DHI method works well for people facing the medical complication of androgenic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss).
If your hair loss condition stems from any kind of trauma such as burns or injuries, a DHI hair transplant would likely be the recommended treatment technology due to the DHI technology’s intense effects and its capability to cover scars.
Recovery Process
Recovery after a DHI hair transplant has minimal scabbing on the recipient areas due to DHI technology not using blades during the extraction or implantation processes, however, swelling and redness might occur in the first few days. Substantially less than with the FUE technology.
Directly after the treatment, patients are required to rest for the remainder of the treatment day, then welcome to explore Istanbul the following day and enjoy their holiday.
1-day post-treatment patients will receive their first hair wash in the clinic.
Generally, around 3-weeks post-treatment, the newly implanted hairs will fall out followed by a brief resting phase. After the resting phase, the implanted roots will grow new hairs gradually creating density from approximately 4 months post-treatment. Significantly noticeable differences are generally seen from 6 months post-treatment.
You can expect to see the full results of a DHI hair transplant at around 12 months post-treatment.
